She was a Robert Wood Johnson postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1983 to 1985 as a clinical nurse scholar in neuroscience. During this time, she researched nursing interventions for cognitive recovery in head injuries and the influence of nursing models on clinical decision making.
Based on Roy, humans are holistic beings that are in constant interaction with their environment. Humans use a system of adaptation, both innate and acquired, to respond to the environmental stimuli they experience. Human systems can be individuals or groups, such as families, organizations, and the whole global community.
As one of the weaknesses of the theory that applying it is time-consuming, applying the model to emergencies requiring quick action is difficult to complete, the individual might have completed the whole adaptation process without the benefit of having a complete assessment for thorough nursing interventions.
Unlike Levine, although the latter tackled adaptation, Roy focused on the whole adaptive system itself. Each concept was linked with the coping mechanisms of every individual in the process of adapting.
Purpose: This research was conducted as randomized controlled experiment with the aim of determining the effect of the education given in accordance with the Roy Adaptation Model on physiological, psychological, and social adaptation of individuals undergoing hemodialysis treatment.
Results: In the second interview, there was a decrease in the systolic blood pressures and body weights of the experimental group, an increase in the scores of functional performance and self-respect, and a decrease in the scores of psychosocial adaptation. In the control group, on the other hand, there was a decrease in the scores of self-respect and an increase in the scores of psychosocial adaptation. The 2 groups were compared in terms of adaptation variables and a difference was determined on behalf of the experimental group.
Conclusion: The training that was provided and evaluated for individuals receiving hemodialysis according to 4 modes of the Roy Adaptation Model increased physical, psychological, and social adaptation.
In today's fast-paced and complex world, the need for spiritualty is greater than ever. The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) 1 provides a strong basis for spiritualty. Spirituality allows us to look beyond the material world to have a central experience of seeking a higher power. This seeking is related to the essence of the person and their relationships with others. Through spirituality, we search for fulfillment, meaning and purpose in life. The RAM 1 reflects spiritualty as rooted in the philosophical assumption of veritivity that sees truth in a creator with principles of unity, diversity and self-expression reflected in all of creation, the earth and in people. People have a basic need for spiritualty. According to the model, spirituality is an influencing factor or stimulus for all adaptive behavior. Spirituality is also a strategy for coping and adapting. Common human spiritual experiences are wonder, awe and gratitude for life, along with acknowledgement of human dependence, finitude and interdependence.
Roy explained that adaptation occurs when people respond positively to environmental changes, and it is the process and outcome of individuals and groups who use conscious awareness, self-reflection, and choice to create human and environmental integration.
The model includes two subsystems, as well. The cognator subsystem is a major coping process involving four cognitive-emotive channels: perceptual and information processing, learning, judgment, and emotion. The regulator subsystem is a basic type of adaptive process that responds automatically through neural, chemical, and endocrine coping channels.
